FanBoys Never Win
PC, console brand, mobile, etc.. Why limit yourself?
One thing I have always found interesting in gaming is the “fanboy” mentality.
I’m not sure where this started. Maybe it goes back to the marketing campaigns in the late 80’s between Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo.
But as time has gone on and social media has become more prominent it’s given voice to some really in-your-face “fanboy” takes on entertainment.
Like many things where people are highly critical, I assume it’s just a vocal minority.
So when someone expresses very passionate opinions about gaming, I try to find some common ground with them and ask about other games they may have played.
The ironic thing is, most of people I have run into who think like this also tend to have missed out on a lot of incredible gaming experiences.
Oftentimes their exposure is fairly limited and they can only talk about many beloved games anecdotally. “oh, I heard THIS about that game so I never played it…”
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As years have rolled on, I have come to realize that I don’t really care what platform a game is on or who developed it. (Unless it’s a company well known for scummy monetization practices.)
In my gaming room I currently have a PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, Retro Handhelds, Batocera console, a gaming tablet and PC.
Every single one of these systems has hidden gems and standout titles that are worth experiencing.
The same people who freak out about the price of a console or three, fail to realize you can purchase every current generation console for less than a competent gaming PC.
We could also split hairs about the specs between PCs, and PS5 vs. Xbox Series X, or Switch vs. mobile.
But if you look at games like Breath of the Wild, Infinity Blade, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, or Genshin Impact you start to realize that a talented development team can make an amazing game on almost any hardware given the proper time, scope and vision.
Don’t let my comparisons lead you to believe that I am critical of PC gaming either.
I have loved PC gaming since playing the original King’s Quest & Doom in the 1980’s. I loved PC gaming while playing the original Grand Theft Auto & Half-Life in the 1990’s. I loved PC gaming in the 2000’s while playing Max Payne, World of Warcraft, F.E.A.R. and Skyrim and I love PC gaming to this day. (Currently playing Dragon Quest XI, Pillars of Eternity, & Final Fantasy XV to name a few.)
So don’t limit yourself and miss out on wonderful stories and experiences just because of some imaginary flaw or mental impasse you have toward a certain platform or brand.
I don’t care what system a game is on. I have had amazing gaming experiences on consoles, PCs, tablets and handhelds. If you truly love gaming, why would you want to limit yourself? It would be like calling yourself an artist, but refusing to use certain colors because *reasons*.
At the end of the day, the main thing I want is AMAZING gaming experiences and any platforms that provide these experiences are worthy of my consideration and appreciation.
If you are open-minded and you let the universe come in, you never know where things might go.
